You make the whole story, as you and up to three friends move into a village and just live life, moving into a home, interacting with your neighbors, and exploring the town. There are many date- and time-based events unique to the Animal Crossing world, so there's always something going on, no matter when you play.

Much of the cast of the original Animal Crossing returns, with over 170 animals of all shapes and personality types--K.K. Slider, Tom Nook, Blathers, Mr. Resetti, and more. There are also a number of all-new characters. New to this game is the fact that your neighbors all have hobbies, so helping them collect fish, bugs, or other things will become a fun pastime. Move into town, buy a house, and then do whatever you want! Time and seasons pass as they do in the real world, so there will always be something unpredictable happening. Collect or buy over 1,500 items, talk to neighbors, go fishing, catch bugs, dig up treasure, or hang out with your human friends.

Tap the Touch Screen to type letters, use items, draw designs for clothing or wallpaper, drag clothing or items onto your characters, interact with characters or objects, or lead your character around the world. You can hang out in real time with up to three of your friends by connecting locally with or by using a wireless internet connection! You can also put your DS into Sleep Mode and it will trade messages and items attached to the messages, with nearby Animal Crossing players!
